Category:Heavily Disputed Foods
If you're adding an item that contains one of these foods, please note its presence immediately after declaring the item otherwise vegan. For example, if a food contained one of items, but was otherwise vegan, you might declare that something like this:
= Is it vegan? = Yes Contains sugar
Be sure to add as much information as you know about the disputed ingredient so that the reader can make an informed choice. The above example is vastly improved by the addition of the following information:
= Is it vegan? = Yes Contains beet sugar
Disputed vs Ambiguous
An ingredient that is ambiguously vegan is one that is, sometimes a plant-derivative, but other times an animal derivatives. If an ambiguous ingredient appears in a food or item you'd like to purchase, you call the manufacturer and resolve the mystery once and for all.
A disputed ingredient is one whose source is known (like honey or sugar) but the vegan community lacks consensus as to whether or not it ought to be considered vegan.
