Adding an item to this wiki
From VeganWiki
Important information to include
Headings every page should strive to include:
- Is it vegan? - Should be brief and right at the top of the page.
- Ingredients
- Link to manufacturer
- References
Headings to consider
- Correspondence - if you've had to contact the manufacturer
- What is it? - if it's not a well-known product or obvious from the name.
If you're not familiar with how to format text on a wiki, you can take a crash course with MediaWiki guide.
Additional Guidelines
- If it contains any Heavily Disputed Foods, please note those immediately below the "Yes" or "No" in the opening "Is it vegan?" section.
- Any correspondence with the manufacturer regarding the vegan status of an item should be included. Please also include your initial inquiry to them, their reply, the dates and times of these correspondences, as well as names and contact information (phone, e-mail address) of the people you interacted with. This way, if the ingredients change, it's easy to contact someone quickly. Feel free to redact your identifying information.
- Keep in mind ingredients change. This wiki may not be up to date on the item's latest ingredients. If you're standing in a supermarket wondering about a product, it's wise to read the ingredients on the item in front of you to confirm that whatever this wiki says is still accurate.
- Some products are erroneously labeled vegan. Please confirm that an item is vegan by reading the ingredients or contacting the company before listing it here.
- Feel free to list items that are not vegan where there might otherwise be some confusion. For example, if you write to a company, and they tell you the product contains animal ingredients, please list that product and your correspondence here so others don't have to re-trace your steps.
- If in doubt, add it. If it's in the wrong place, or incomplete, it's still better than being totally absent. However, do not add information you're not sure of. If you are pretty that the glycerin in a gum is plant-based, say you're pretty sure. It's fine to be unsure, but don't present conjecture as fact.
- If an item also falls within the accepted limits of another diet, such as raw, or gluten-free or kosher, feel free to note that. Although that is not the intended audience of this site, those of us with restrictive diets are in similar boats, and we should all support each other where we can.
- While there are some great arguments that soy or gluten will kill you, an item's potential adverse health effects are beyond the scope of this wiki.
